Countertop reverse osmosis for renters: which ones are actually certified?

No drilling, no drain clamp, nothing the landlord will notice. Countertop RO is the renter's route to reverse osmosis — but "RO" on the box does not mean a certifier has listed it for lead. We checked the IAPMO, NSF and WQA listings on 26–27 October 2026.

Certified countertop reverse osmosis — confirmed on the official listing

Reverse osmosis units are certified under NSF/ANSI 58; the claims next to the model number are the ones that count. A unit can be certified for TDS alone, which proves the membrane works, without any lead or PFAS claim. Carbon-stage claims (PFOA/PFOS, VOC) sit under NSF/ANSI 53 on a separate listing.

IAPMO R&T read 27 Oct 2026; WQA read 26 Oct 2026. "GPD" is the listed daily production rate.

Countertop RO that did not make the list

A TDS-only certification is not nothing: it proves the membrane rejects dissolved solids under test conditions, and a working RO membrane does remove lead in practice. But the maker chose not to pay for the lead test, so nobody independent has checked that claim on that unit. We list what the certificate lists.

Countertop without the RO: two certified carbon units

If your water report shows lead but not nitrate, arsenic or fluoride, you may not need a membrane at all. Two countertop carbon units are certified for lead with no tank to refill and no waste water:

What renting changes about the math

We did not re-read unit and filter prices for this page on 27 October 2026; prices move weekly on these units. The calculator takes whatever price you see today.

Check any unit yourself in two minutes

  1. Find the exact model number (AT2000, RO100ROPOT-Lite, WD-K19-S-US…).
  2. Search it on IAPMO R&T, WQA or NSF.
  3. Under NSF/ANSI 58, read the reduction claims next to the model. "TDS" alone means TDS alone.
  4. For PFAS, look for a second listing under NSF/ANSI 53 with "PFOA/PFOS" or "Total PFAS".
